Revered Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj spoke on 11th September 2025, the final day of Mandala Puja of Salem Ashrama’s Kumbhabhishekam.

Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama was started in the year 1919 and the Shrine building was dedicated in 1928. The old Ashrama in 1960’s had a beautiful mango tree and in front of it was like a hut - the old Ashrama. Gradually the Ashrama developed and projected itself to such an extent of a beautiful surrounding with a big temple.

In those days it was Swami Desikanandaji who was here. It was notified in the Ashrama Committee report that I (in his pre-monastic days - as a devotee) contributed 12 annas per month. That was the situation of the Ashrama then. Today the Ashrama is developed to crores of rupees; the land & buildings. I myself was associated with powerful and great Swamiji’s here - Swami Desikanandaji, Swami Kshamanandaji and Swami Somanandaji. I was associated with Salem Ashrama for 18 years.

On seeing the gradual development of the Ashrama I also remember two pillars in the development - first Seethalakshmi Ramasamy and next Ramakrishna Mines owner Munusamy Chettiar. These two people went around the Ashrama to find out the needs of the Ashrama was facing then and contributed their help / mite.

I am so happy to see the progress of the Ashrama from a small hut to the present structure. I am here on the Mandala Puja of Kumbhabhishekam to participate and contribute my part.

Sri Ramakrishna wanted every house to be an Ashrama. Let me cite an incident - One day Sri Ramakrishna while living in Dakshineswar Kali Temple, asked Lakshmi didi and Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi to bring some flowers. They brought the flowers thinking it was to worship the pictures of the Gods and Goddesses. Then he asked to bring his photo. He put the flowers to his photo. On seeing this Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Lakshmi didi cried fearing he would pass away soon. Because no one worships a living person’s photo. Sri Ramakrishna said, “No, don't cry. You will see with your own eyes that this photo will be worshiped in every household”. this is the ideal of Sri Ramakrishna that every house should become an Ashrama.

That way Ramakrishna will be in every house - it is the responsibility of everyone to make the household into an Ashrama. It is everyone's responsibility to bring the ideal of Sri Ramakrishna to every home. Mind to think, heart to feel, hands to work for the change - to bring every household as Ashrama.

May Sri Ramakrishna bless you all on this grand occasion and especially grant the boon to every individual - irrespective of his initiation or not, those who have come to the Ashrama, seen Sri Ramakrishna in the Shrine, will definitely get his blessings.

I pray for his blessings to reach everyone in a nice sincere way.

And remember this, who came as Sri Ramachandra in Treta yuga, as Sri Krishna in Dwapara yuga, came in Kali yuga as Sri Ramakrishna, the Purna Avatara.

Holy Life of Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj (1939-2025)

Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj, affectionately known to many as Nagaraj Maharaj, attained Mahasamadhi on 23rd December at Chinmaya Hrudayalaya Hospital, Bengaluru, due to coronary heart disease. He was 86 years old. He took Saturday class on 20.12.2025. Admitted at the hospital on 21.12.2025; operated on 22.12.2025 & passed away on 23.12.2025.

In the passing away of Maharaj, we have lost not merely a senior monk, but a quiet pillar of dedication, discipline, and self-effacing service - a life lived in the true spirit of the Ramakrishna Order.

Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj was initiated by Revered Swami Madhavanandaji Maharaj and joined the holy Order in 1964 at Deoghar Vidyapith, a place sanctified by rigorous spiritual training and deep scriptural study. He later received Sannyasa Diksha from Revered Swami Vireshwaranandaji Maharaj in 1974, thus dedicating his entire life to the great ideal of

Atmano Mokshartham Jagat Hitaya Cha - one’s own liberation and the welfare of the world.

For over five decades of monastic life, Maharaj served the Order with humility, steadiness, and unwavering sense of duty. His service took him to several centres -Deoghar (1964-71) - 7 years, Along (1971-75) - 4 years , Belur Math, Shyamalatal, Chennai Vidyapith (1978-84) 6 years, Kankhal (1986), and Mysuru - mostly in the role of an assistant, a responsibility he discharged with dignity and devotion. Never seeking prominence, he found fulfilment in supporting the Mission silently and efficiently, embodying the true spirit of Karma Yoga. He conducted study circle for the hostel students at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, Chennai. He was strict, close with students and remembered their names. He was in touch with many of them later also. The students were greatly indebted to him. He voluntarily served at Kankhal Ashrama during the two Kumbhamelas.

A significant chapter of his service was at Mysuru, where he served as the Correspondent of the Ramakrishna Institute of Moral and Spiritual Education (RIMSE). During his tenure, the institute witnessed meaningful academic and spiritual expansion. B.Ed. programmes, diploma courses for working teachers, and spiritual retreats were conducted for educators from Kendriya Vidyalayas, Morarji Desai Residential Schools, and other institutions. Through these efforts, Maharaj contributed substantially to the moral and spiritual enrichment of teachers, thereby touching the lives of countless students indirectly.

He would repeatedly say to the students:

“Education is that which makes one self-reliant and selfless.”

Maharaj lived this ideal throughout his life. His example teaches us that true success is not measured by fame or wealth, but by discipline, honesty, and service to society.
To students, the best tribute to Maharaj is to study sincerely, respect your teachers, and use your learning for the good of others. If you grow not only in intelligence but also in compassion, his life will have truly touched yours.

Maharaj later served as Head of several centres, including Narottam Nagar (1986-89) - 3 years, Ponnampet (1989-91) - 2 years, Salem (1998-2006) - 8 years, and Ooty (2006-2016) - 10 years, discharging his responsibilities with quiet firmness and compassionate leadership.

His tenure as Head of the Ponnampet Centre (1989–1991) deserves special mention. During this period, he made sincere efforts to strengthen and develop the Ramakrishna Sevashrama Hospital, bringing in competent doctors and upgrading the pharmacy facilities. His concern for healthcare was not merely administrative—it arose from a deep spiritual conviction:

“Shiva Jñāne Jīva Sevā”

Service to the living being as service to God.

Sri Ramakrishna expressed this truth simply:

“Service to man is service to God.”

Maharaj lived this ideal quietly. He understood that healing is not only physical, but also emotional and spiritual. As healthcare workers, doctors, and staff, you carry forward this sacred responsibility every day—relieving pain, offering comfort, and restoring hope. In remembering Maharaj, let us renew our commitment to serve with discipline, skill, kindness, and selflessness.

At the Salem and Ooty Centres, Maharaj continued to guide the activities of the Mission with the same spirit of simplicity, order, and devotion, strengthening the spiritual atmosphere and institutional harmony through his presence and example. He modified the alter of Salem Ashrama’s Shrine with wooden frame. He built the Free Tuition Centre at Pudur Kallanguthur, Salem-07 & it was inaugurated in 2001. At Ooty Math he compiled the history of the Math and published it.

From 2016 onwards, Maharaj lived a retired life at the Halasuru Centre. Yet, retirement for him never meant inactivity. True to his nature, he conducted weekend spiritual classes for devotees and remained inwardly active - immersed in scriptural study, reflection, and quiet spiritual pursuit. He used to take long walks.

Austere in habit and exceptionally kind-hearted, Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj was deeply devoted to the study of scriptures. One of his most remarkable and enduring contributions was his meticulous transcription of the class notes of Revered Swami Tyagishanandaji Maharaj, delivered between 1938 and 1950, covering profound scriptural teachings and the Bhagavad Gita. This labour of love reflects not only his scholarship, but also his reverence for a great saintly teacher and his commitment to preserving spiritual wisdom for future generations. Srimad Bhagavad Gita : Insights and Significance by Swami Tyagishanandaji and edited by Swami Sukhatmanandaji from the notes of Swami Kirtidanandaji, as Br. Srikantiah (1945-50). This is published by Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in 2019, priced Rs.400/- it may be added that Isavasya Upanishad and A True import of Dharma by the Revered Swamiji and edited by Swami Sukhatmanandaji are published by Viveka Hamsa Prakasana, Bengaluru in 2013.

Maharaj never sought recognition. His strength lay in discipline, silence, simplicity, and sincerity. He taught more by his life than by words-showing how a monk can remain content in obscurity, joyful in service, and steadfast in spiritual aspiration. He was keen to uphold the traditions of the Order. He had great regard for old, senior sadhus and recorded their conversations. His close relation Swami Kirtidanandaji also a swami of the Order led a great life and passed away.

As we bid farewell to this noble soul, let us remember that such lives do not truly end. They continue to inspire us—quietly urging us to be sincere in our duties, pure in our intentions, and compassionate in our dealings.

Vedanta reminds us that death is not an end, but a return - laya into the Infinite. The Bhagavad Gita declares:

“न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचित्

नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः।

अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो

न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे॥”

(Bhagavad Gītā 2.20)

“The Self is never born, nor does It ever die…

It is not slain when the body is slain.”

Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj lived this truth quietly. His austere life, tireless service, and deep love for scripture reflect the ideal of the sthita-prajña - firmly established in the Self while engaged in duty.

Sri Ramakrishna said: “Those who live for God and for the good of others do not really die. They continue to work for the world even after leaving the body.”

Maharaj lived such a life - simple, disciplined, and full of quiet dedication. Though unseen now, his influence remains.

Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi lovingly assures us: “If you take one step towards God, He takes ten steps towards you.”

Maharaj’s entire life was that single, continuous step toward God. We trust that the Divine Mother has drawn him close, showering her infinite grace upon him.

The best way to honour Maharaj is not merely to remember him, but to live the values he practiced - simplicity in life, sincerity in work, kindness in heart, and faith in God.
May Swami Sukhatmanandaji Maharaj’s pure soul rest in eternal peace, and may his life continue to inspire us on our spiritual journey.
